Salesmanship In Print

Advertising advertisingIt doesn’t matter if you are building a web site to sell something or are placing an ad in a magazine or newspaper. Everything you do is…

Salesmanship In Print…

I once read that line in a book on copywriting. It still rings in my head today as being one of the most important lessons in marketing. Advertisers all to often forget that all important fact when creating their materials. Take a look through any magazine, look around at billboards you might see in a train station or on the highway. You might see a picture and the name of the company. What the hell is that? Oh yeah advertising agencies call it “image advertising” or “we are building your brand”. I call it a waste of time. Where are the benefits and features that help me make a buying decision? Where is the copy that makes me want, no wait a second where is the copy that makes me see in my minds eye that I am already using the product! That is what great advertising does, and is so much more important. Make people want your product or service. Make them believe that they need it. Every piece of marketing material that leaves your company should have a purpose. Whether that purpose is to generate leads for your sales team to make the sale, to have your phone lines ringing so you can take orders directly or to have people go to the store to buy something. MAKE YOUR MATERIALS COUNT! Another advantage of this is every ad is trackable, you can tell how well it did. You can test two ads at the same time to see which one pulls better results. Its just a much smarter way of doing business. I have worked for ad agencies plenty of times before, and it still makes me shake my head when they argue that the ad doesnt “look” good. Well yeah it might not win any art awards but I bet you ten bucks it sells the crap out of the product. Beware when an ad agency tells you its an award winning agency, alot of agencies I have run into use that to hide the fact that although they might have won some awards, the results can be lacking or not trackable at all.

-Note: I wrote this as a guest post for another blog some time ago. It was tailored to the “agency mentality” but please keep in mind that it applies to everyone. Whether you operate a web site out of your house selling ebooks or a multi-million dollar business your materials should always sell. When I read on a message board “how come my ebook or my product is not selling” and I look at the materials they use to try to sell the item, this discussion quickly comes up. A well designed web page is the ultimate sales person, it never sleeps and is selling even when you are :-) . Now thats how you begin to live “The New Rich” lifestyle.

If you would like further reading on this subject I highly recommend Jackie Cooper’s article on the subject which can be found here http://www.jackiecooperwriter.com/2009/02/24/salesmanship-in-print/.
Jackie is a direct response copywriter and has a huge wealth on knowledge on her website at JackieCooperWriter.com. Bottom line, you may not think you are a sales person but you are. So start getting your copy and marketing materials to SELL!

Don’t Just Be Busy…Be Effective

flying to IrelandIn today’s fast paced society we are all busy. The majority of people are so busy and so distracted by life in general they get nothing done. Its not enough to be busy, you have to be effective as well.

I want to introduce you to a site that specializes on the importance of not just being busy but being effective as well. It’s not everyday that I recommend a site such as this but I thought it is very important to stress this concept as it is part of the new rich mentality as well as just good business.

beingeffective.net investigates how you can achieve much more with much less effort, however, it doesn’t explain to you how to do more, it’s about doing what matters. Very powerful concept when put into action. I urge you to take a look, bookmark it and tell your friends. This site and the information available on beingeffective.net will put your quest into joining the new rich into motion. Oh yeah, tell them inside the new rich sent ya!

Is There An Upside To A Down Turn?

ItEven if you live off the grid, you are aware of the problems we are experiencing with the economy. People are getting laid off, fortunes are being lost in the stock market, people are saving what they can and basically running for cover. Its a shame we have to live through this especially coming off of the wave we have been riding here in the United States for so long. Unfortunately, because of various reasons (which I have my own opinion on but I wont go into here) we have to deal it. But as business owners, internet marketers or even employees is there really an up side to all of this?

Human nature tells us to run and hide when we experience something like this. The media paints a doom and gloom picture and basically has the entire business world pressing the panic button and from there on in its just spiral down hill. Companies are tightening their belts by slashing advertising, putting a hault on production and even cutting staff like crazy. The retail industry desperate to move inventory cuts prices just to try to get people in the store. When all is said and done at the end of the day “WE ARE SCREWED”.

Well lets explore for a moment what would happen to our business (no matter what size, you can be a Fortune 500 company or a 1 person internet marketer) if we were to NOT push the panic button, sit back analyze our situation and come up with an actual game plan on how we are going to actually INCREASE our business during this time. It is possible, its almost counter intuitive but absolutely possible. What any company or individual needs to focus on right now more than anything is “Building Your Brand”. Branding is something I am sure you all know the definition of when it comes to business (if you don’t send me an email or leave a comment and I’ll address that as well). While the rest of your competition is slashing advertising and running for cover and essentially losing ground why aren’t you making a push to gain the ground they are losing? The advertising industry is hit just as hard during these times, so not only is everything negotiable but its CHEAP! Think about it, if you stay at the top of people’s minds right now by building a strong brand now who do you think is going to be at top position when the economy once again explodes?

A Great Read And Some Free Tools

The Toolbox is Organized!
There is an excellent article on Markus Frind on the Inc. magazine site. If you are not familiar with him Markus is the founder of plentyoffish.com. I won’t go into it much further here because I want you all to read the article which can be found here:

http://www.inc.com/magazine/20090101…olling-in.html

I find his comment on “pick a niche in which the competition charges money, build a dead simple free website and pay for it using google adsense” quite interesting. Thinking about it for awhile it seems that this could be the spring board for a ton of ideas.

I am curious to see what your thoughts are on this.

Also, in order for us to achieve certain business goals we need to have certain tools. Personally, I like to work remotely so I do not have to be strapped down to an “office” in order to get work done. It gives me a certain sense of freedom, and I honestly feel that it helps me creatively. I want to share with you a few “tools” that I use quite a bit. I think you will like them as well.

http://jott.com-excellent tool for doing a variety of tasks while on the go. Driving and have a great idea, or want to schedule or remind yourself of an appointment? Jott it!

docs.google.com-If you are not familiar with Google Docs, or more importantly using them you should be. Such a great resource to have things at your fingertips no matter where you are and it keeps everything extremely organized. Get yourself a Google account and go explore!

http://www.youmail.com-visual voicemail is a great tool to have. Jott offers the same service now, but its only free for a week. Youmail’s basic service is free and it is another excellent tool for your toolbox. Enjoy!

All of the above services I forgot to mention are FREE! That’s important to me. I’m not cheap by any sense of the imagination but I really do not want to subscribe to every service under the sun and pay for it. Before you know it, I would be spending a couple of hundred a month on so called “productivity” tools when a simple notebook would suit me just fine but isn’t quite as “cool”! Please leave your comments and if you have any further suggestions as to some additional services or tools I would also love to hear about them.

Inside The New Rich

the 4-hour workweek by tim ferriss

The New Rich. Possibly a phrase you’ve heard before but maybe not. If you have read the hugely popular book “The 4 Hour Workweek” then without a doubt you know what I am referring to. For those of you that don’t lets digress a minute here and explain.

The New Rich is a group of people that are abandoning the typical “workplace mindset” for two things. Time and mobility. They can work anywhere at anytime, mostly just needing a laptop and internet access to carry on their “business”. Very interesting concept, and with today’s economic client more and more individuals are abandoning the “corporate” mindset for the new rich lifestyle. Making the new rich lifestyle work is an on going experiment in productivity.

Tim Ferriss did an excellent job on the 4 Hour Work Week. The ideas and concepts of the new rich blew the doors off of conventional thinking about how business is done. The concept of the new rich is obviously a popular one cascading Mr. Ferriss to the top of the New York Times Bestseller list as well as making his lifestyle design blog one of the most visited and popular on the internet. It is obvious that there is a huge amount of interest in the concept and that the ideas of the new rich are here to stay and will do nothing but grow in popularity in the future.

Insidethenewrich.com is a site that will explore not only the new rich concepts of business but also productivity and lifestyle as well. Case studies as well as ideas and observations and specific examples of how you may modify your existing lifestyle into that of the new rich.

If you have any comments please leave them here or feel free to email them to insidethenewrich@gmail.com. Your thoughts, ideas as well as questions on the new rich are always welcome. If you are attempting or are living the new rich lifestyle your experiences and observations would be an asset to share here.
